Real picture postcard showing Walter Brookins (the Wright's first exhibition pilot) wreck during the 1910 Gordon Bennett Race in which he was injured. But of more importance are the postmarks on the reverse reading AERIAL SPECIAL DISPATCH and carrying the postmark of Aeroplane Station No. 1/Sep 26, 1911/Garden City Estates, N.Y. So this was actually flown in a Pioneer Airmail flight in 1911. Some pencil annotations on the back and it may be this was addressed at one time in pencil but much has been erased or lightened over the following 119 years. This is American Airmail Catalog No. 3a, the first official airmail flown by Earle Ovington, Capt. Paul W. Beck and T.O.M. Sopwith; 43,247 pieces of mail were flown. Very good condition.
