
Rare large 15" x 9" period framed photo, under glass, of the first North Pole flight by the Italian Airship NORGE. Wonderful inscription by General Umberto Nobile: "To Major P.E. Van Nostrand of the U.S. Air Corps most cordially and with feelings of cameradesti (sic); Honolulu, January 14th, 1927, Gen. Umberto Nobile". Van Nostrand was a key figure in U.S. airship development and deployment. At the time of this inscription he was assigned to the Hawaiian Dept as commander of Luke Field and the 5th Composite Group. Photo has Italian text in the lower right detailing the famous crossing of the North Pole by the Norge under the command of Nobile on 12 May 1926. Excellent original condition.
