Color plate, overall 10 x 8" image 7.5 x 5", as removed from the 1819 publication "Travels in Various Countries of Europe, Asia and Africa" by Edward Daniel Clark.  Title below image is "The Natives of Tornea Lapmark Assembled at Econtekis to Witness the Launch of the First Balloon Within the Arctic Circle".  Image shows a man sitting on the roof of a store house holding a pole from which the balloon had been suspended.  Another man holds a burning stick to provide heat to inflate the balloon.  Many Laplanders watch the balloon ascension while reindeer, frightened by the balloon, scamper off.  Irregularly trimmed at lower edge but printers text can be read as "Published Jan 1, 1819 by T. Cadell and W. Davies, Strand, London".  Light toning but otherwise good.  Would be very attractive matted and framed.
