Pioneer FLOWN AIRMAIL Postcard, Garden City Estates N.Y. - 25 Sep 1911

24-AR-10

Regular price $275.00

Real picture postcard showing Glen Curtiss (misspelled "Curtis") with text in the negative "B296 Curtis Starting".  But of more importance are the postmarks on the reverse reading AERIAL SPECIAL DISPATCH and carrying the postmark of Aeroplane Station No. 1/Sep 25, 1911/Garden City Estates, N.Y. So this was actually flown in a Pioneer Airmail flight in 1911. Addressed on the back with the penciled message: "First Air-line U.S. Mail postcard". Also back-stamped Freeport, New York the next day  This is American Airmail Catalog No. 3a, the first official airmail flown by Earle Ovington, Capt. Paul W. Beck and T.O.M. Sopwith; 43,247 pieces of mail were flown. Very good condition; one small circular chip in the right margin not affecting image.
