Wonderful FLOWN postcard from the 3rd Pioneer Airmail Flight in the U.S.! Postcard carries the circular cancellation "Aeroplane Station No.1 / Garden City Estates N.Y." and the single line cachet: "AERIAL SPECIAL DESPATCH". A total of 43,000 pieces of mail were flown over the period 23-28 and 29 September by the first airmail pilot Earle Ovington. This piece being one flown on the last day mail was flown.
On the image side is an original photo of Helen Dutrieu, arguably the most accomplished and famous female aviator in Europe, 1909-1913. She first soloed in France in 1909. In 1910 she flew non-stop Ostend to Bruges, Belgium and was the first Belgian women to receive a pilot's license. She debuted in America at the Nassau Boulevard Aviation Meet and set an endurance record there. Back in France she won France's Coupe Femina with a flight of 254 km. In Italy she beat all male competitors for the King's Cup. The French awarded her the Legion of Honor in 1913. Excellent condition.
